Christmas 2011

It's now Tuesday, December 27, weather is cold outside and the gas logs are putting out some heat. We left Alabama on Dec. 9 and headed to Texas. We began at our son's apartment with him and his fiance, Megan, and new puppy, Slugger. We did a little shopping, went to a football autograph signing, but mostly just enjoyed time together. Had a big surprise when Kevin and Melinda Cook and their grandson showed up at Chicken Express for dinner. Melinda cut my hair for several years while we lived in Willow Park.

On December 11, we headed south, worshipping at Westland Heights Baptist Church in Fort Worth, which was the site of our BFC mission project this past June, then stopping off in Weatherford to visit Scott and Sheila Haines, who have just moved back to the area from California. Enjoyed lunch with them and seeing their new home.

Traveling on south and west, we showed up at the Soldier's Hospitality House in Killeen that evening - and the grandkids were waiting to give us hugs and kisses. We enjoyed our time with them, and meeting members of the military community at Fort Hood. Nate and Megan came down the next Sunday and we had "Christmas" with the kids ... gifts from Daddy Barron and Grandmama Jan, Family gifts, and also from the Benton clan. On Wednesday, we had a wonderful time watching the kids open gifts from each other and their parents.

On Thursday, Santa came through and left the grandkids quite a few goodies. During the time with them, we took the gang out to see "Arthur Christmas", then took the kids out for dinner one night. The granddaughters decided they needed a "separate time with grandparents" so we enjoyed lunch at Cracker Barrel, ice cream and playground at McDonalds, followed by a mini-shopping trip to Barnes and Noble bookstore.

Enroute to Phenix City on Friday to have a few days with Jan's family, we met up with Nate and Megan in Shreveport, enjoyed breakfast at McDonald's, and got introduced to Megan's Dad. Arrived in Phenix City in time to see the family at Brent and Christina's home - newly married in October. Nate and Megan arrived not much later. Saturday was spent preparing goodies for the Sunday gathering, and having fun with the Pelletier family. We are always so thankful for them hosting us when we are in town.

Sunday was breakfast and lunch with the entire Benton clan that were able to gather at Mom and Dad's house. With the parents being 90 and 84, this was a very sweet time and we made sure to get family group pictures.

Monday was a quick shopping trip with Julie and a friend, and then we headed home to Cullman.

2011 Scott Ancestry meeting

Gene Loyd hosts an ancestry meeting for those Scott relatives who are doing genealogy. This is an annual event held at Kyuka Baptist Church in Duck Springs, AL (near Snead/Boaz). We enjoyed seeing these folks again, great food and fellowship, and then a most interesting demonstration of grave dousing. Civil War stories and letters were shared as well.

Scott Relatives Visit from Ohio

We were so excited to have Aunt Betty, Cindy Scherer, and Engrid Perry come visit from Ohio and attend the Scott Reunion. They also helped the Cullman economy as they bought items every place we visited. From the Farmer's Market to Steele Orchard, dinner at the Old Cookstove Mennonite Restaurant, Phillip and Nancy Garrison's Gold Vine Honey Barn, and Dollar General. We also made a trip over to Snead to the Old Clear Creek Cemetery where many of the Scotts are buried, and Ebenezer Cemetery in West Point/Vinemont.

What a great time we had this year and what a great attendance! Here are a sample of the pics I took ... go to Facebook to see the album. It was so good to have Scott Williams come by for a short visit. Betty Scott (Clyde's widow) made the trip south so she could attend the reunion. We lost Clyde last year. Sandy's son Chris, wife Jenn, and daughter Savannah, joined us this year. Aunt Fannie and Aunt Martha Nell came this year, and bittersweet, Beckie Judkins. We lost Donald Ma week ago to cancer. Glenda was very excited to see Van and Doris Scott join us this year. In my opinion, the BEST Scott reunion I have attended.

Staying Busy

My parents invited their children and grandchildren on a Memory Vacation to the Isle of Palms, South Carolina. We had a MARVELOUS time. Unfortunately our children could not make it from Texas. Enjoyed spending time with parents and siblings and a couple of nephews. I will add a few pictures. Barron's favorite thing was touring the USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point. I enjoyed playing cards, swimming, the spa, and just talking!

Barron, who had been our cook for the first week of the vacation, returned home to make sure the garden was tended and the grass cut. I headed to Phenix City to be the "legs" for the sisters who gave Christian, nephew Brent's fiance, a kitchen shower. It turned out very well, but I must admit to being very tired.

It was so good to get back home and see our Spring Arbor church family, but sad on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

Our adventure for the week was getting stuck in the house elevator with Barron's cousin, Lori, and her husband, JR, who had come over to visit us.

The Sea Palace was our home for 10 days!

Recent Events

Nate proposed Sunday night to Megan while vacationing in Panama City Beach. Uncle Steve was kind enough to take them out on the Gulf and they enjoyed seeing a school of dolphins! Several of Nate's friends showed up to celebrate the big event.

I drove out to Fort Worth and picked up Elizabeth and the girls and made the trek to Killeen. Several church groups have come in to get the residence cleaned up, painted and ready for occupation. Other groups have come in and are painting the house side which is so exciting. These youth groups have helped with VBS, Backyard Bible Clubs, etc on Post. Hoping that the occupation of the residence happens real soon and that the May family can finally get settled in!

I have enjoyed meeting some of the soldiers here at Fort Hood.Some are back from Iraq and Afghanistan and others will be deploying soon.

Barron stayed home to care for garden and yard, and enjoyed a visit with his brother Jonathan who is working in the Georgia province of Russia. Hoping he will be back at Christmas with a stateside job!

Have especially enjoyed spending time with the grandkids as they have kept busy with friends or helping paint, clean, etc. Will post pictures later.

What a Winter!!

Sitting near the fire tonight watching quite another snowfall. Church was called off due to the approaching snow/sleet. Don't think we really will get much, but the thought of snow always draws excitement. The kids are playing with Legos and horses and computers. Chris got my laptop to work better and longer - at least for tonight. Know that in just a couple of weeks Barron and I will have quiet again in our house, but I know that withdrawal from grandkids will set in pretty quickly too!!

This has been a bittersweet time, knowing that they are with us for a limited time. Have enjoyed helping with the homeschooling - even was substitute teacher one day - and seeing how quickly the kids are learning and expanding their horizons. Was there the day the girls realized they could put sounds together and READ! Caleb is a sponge and reads quite well, and David is typing 20 wpm with no errors! I was impressed with them all!!

Barron has been an excellent chef, and even allowed Chris to try out some recipes. Their presentation at Spring Arbor was excellent, the first time we had actually heard Chris preach. Now looking forward to their next step in ministry as they return to Texas and prepare to take over the Soldier's Hospitality House in September.

Really miss having Nate nearby ... looking forward to seeing him at least in June at our BFC Mission Project in Fort Worth! He is branching out to a new Chicken Express in Corinth, Texas which will probably mean a move for him and Megan to a place closer to his work.

And I mention all the work at the creek having to do with beavers and their dams --- and putting out traps for armadillos that are determined to tear up our yard!!

Snow Storm of 2011

We have been housebound for 3 days and really enjoying going out in the snow, making a snowman, and loved watching Auburn win the National Championship!!

Christmas 2010

What a great time with family! First we enjoyed Santa and family exchange of gifts at our home. Then traveled to Phenix City to spend Christmas Day with my parents/siblings/children. Snow on Christmas Day in Phenix City -- almost unbelievable??!! Then staying several days with my parents just to have time with them. Brought the video camera so I could tape my Dad sharing about his childhood days in South Carolina. Can't wait to share it with others. So glad Nate gave me a laptop so I can keep up with everyone and work on my genealogy research too.

Nate and Megan were able to travel to Shreveport to see Ga Tech in the Independence Bowl - but unfortunately Air Force won that one!

Enjoying quiet time with parents playing Spades and now watching Jeopardy (my mom's fav). Tomorrow Mom, sister Julie and myself will drive to the new Fort Benning Infantry Museum to see the IMAX movie, "Lewis and Clark Expedition".

Thanksgiving 2010

A great time - and delicious food - with family and friends. Thanks to sister Julie for hosting the gathering of the Benton clan this year, and the Cox family as special guests. So glad Cheryl's brother, David, was able to be with us, and friend Mike Minor and son, Chad. Nate's girlfriend, Megan, was able to make the trip with him. Elizabeth, Chris and the grandkids caravaned with them, and so we got to visit with both our kids in Phenix City. I think our final count was approx 35 folks.

Nate and Megan traveled on up to Cullman with us on Friday night and we spent time showing off Cullman on Saturday and shopping - had to buy some new #1 Auburn stuff - and then they had to return to Fort Worth on Sunday.

Elizabeth and family stayed over in Phenix City to visit others, and will arrive later today (Weds, Dec 1) for a few weeks at least. Counting on the grandkids to add ornaments to the Christmas tree that Barron and I set up yesterday.

Retirement and Travel -- Woo Hoo!!!!!!

The month of October was my first retirement month so we traveled to Texas to visit kids. Eliz/family were staying at Gayle Wells, and then were able to stay at the Soldier's Hospitality House at Fort Hood. Then Barron and I visited with railroad friends, Wilson and Judy Underwood, in Houston area while enroute from Texas to Florida. We were able to spend a few minutes visiting my Aunt Jac and Uncle Frank in Baton Rouge as well.

Then a week in Florida as guests of my sister, Karen and hubby Steve, while my parents, brother Jay and sister Cathy were at Ocean Towers for a timeshare week. Had a great time and ate very well -- love that seafood!!!

Barron headed on home to Cullman to take care of the garden and yard, while I returned with my parents to their home on Friday. I was able to help chauffeur my Mom to her compression therapy for several days. My home church celebrated its 125th birthday and I was glad to be able to participate in that!

Most fun event: We all went to the Flower Mound (TX) Pumpkin Patch and enjoyed inflatables, haybale mazes, having pics made with various (wooden) children television characters. Here is Nate having his picture made with the nieces and nephews!! His girlfriend, Megan, was able to go with us too.

Barron made a ring toss game for the kids to enjoy, and we had a bale of hay with a wooden scarecrow -- and did I mention the Beware Spooky organ music gadget that Barron loved to show the kids??!! We were delighted to have Travis and Allegra (The Travis Lee Band) as our guests over the weekend. They performed at the Harvest Fest and on Sunday morning as well.

Known by various names over the years, and I had the great opportunity to learn about all of them yesterday. I took the video camera with me when I drove to Phenix City for the July 4, 2010 weekend and spent several hours on Monday "interviewing" my Mama!! She did great. We started with (1) first childhood memory, (2) school years/friends/homes/vacations, (3) high school/college, (4) meeting Dad/marriage - 64 years - and (5) was able to get thru 6 kids births too!! Yes, we took a long lunch break in there. And yes, we three who were there (Cathy, Julie, and myself) learned stuff!! But mostly I learned that we Benton sisters (4 of us) are strong women because of our Mom. Dad had an Army career and then Civil Service career that required much of him, and Mom persevered through all of that, raising 6 children, being a stay-home Mom, then a working Mom, and now a retired-from-work Mom, but never from just being our Mom! Not only that, as an only child, she cared for her Mom for over twenty years after my Granddaddy died. Granny didn't drive, didn't know how to handle money, didn't know how to change the thermostat from winter to summer temps - and Mom (and Dad) were always there. This is a special tribute to a very special lady -- my Mom!! Who is even more special to me because she loves my husband, my children, and my grandchildren!!!!!!! And lastly, my Mom is a Christian woman who always taught us Christian values, and has lived those values these 83 years. Thanks Mom!!!!!

David Garrison and sons came yesterday and cut down our cedar tree. It had slowly rotted and the last storm took most of it. The kids are going to miss their disc swing and we will miss the shade!. The hillside seems almost naked and the bench looks lonely!

How exciting it has been to have good friends come to visit us in Alabama. Willie works for that "other railroad" - Union Pacific - and teaches preschoolers during Sunday School at our former church, Willow Park FBC. Donna is a homemaker who loves antiques, pretty flowers, good books and her Lord!!

They arrived about lunchtime on Monday and while I was at work, Barron drove them to see a bit of Cullman, the older, beautiful homes, unfortunately Margos was closed, over to Seventh Street to meet Sandy, and then lunch. Monday night Barron outdid himself with a great meal: Honey Baked Ham (courtesy of Jonathan, my mother's day gift), fresh corn (thanks to corn fairies at Boyd Farm), fried squash and okra (from our garden), and sweet cantaloupe -- simply delicious!!

Tuesday I skipped work so we could spend the time checking out the local sites: Cullman Museum, Festhalle Farmer's Market, Downtown Grill for lunch, Ave Maria Grotto, Cripple Creek Civil War Museum. After a two hour rest back at the house, we drove over to Lake Guntersville State Park and then Top of the River for dinner, after which we fed the turtles and fish, and enjoyed the sunset on their dock.

Back to work for me on Wednesday, but the other three made it back to Margo's, Sportsman's Lake and Veterans Park, and a stop to pick up some groceries at Piggly Wiggly. Tried to download Willie's video onto my computer but no luck, but he did fix our DVD player so we could enjoy the Dennis Swanberg video they brought us. Another great meal by Chef Barron: grilled steaks, salad, baked potato, leftover fresh corn, sauteed mushrooms, grilled squash - yummy!!!

Phillip Garrison agreed to meet us at the Honey Barn for a quick tour of his beekeeping/honey making operation and beeswax candles store -- plus much info on the syrup making business as well. I think he has convinced Willie and Donna to come back in October to watch the syrup making process up close and personal. Since we missed church, we called and invited Roger and Vickie to come over after dinner to meet our guests and enjoy the famous "right out of the oven" orange rolls from All Steak restaurant. We enjoyed their visit, checking out the garden too. Willie just keeps finding hidden squash in there.

Sadly, our company had to leave this morning and I had to head to work. But we are sure looking forward to them coming back!!! We loaded them up with squash, corn, honey and candles. See all the pictures as a separate post.

MURRAY'S VISIT

What fun!! Mike and Debbie Murray, and their 16 year old granddaughter, Rachel, are headed out this morning for Smyrna, GA to continue their genealogy digging and to visit Mike's sister, but we were so pleased that they chose to backtrack from Anniston/Oxford to spend a day (and two nights) with us. We thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and it was so good to make a connection again since we left Texas in 2008. Christian friends are just the best!!!!

We were proud to show off our new home and all the landscaping that Barron has done. Then a tour of our beautiful town (and architecture and new murals) of Cullman, an informative tour of the Cullman Museum, purchasing fresh veggie and fruits at the Festhall farmer's market, checking out the bargains at the Tool Shed/Flea Market, showing off our church and Barron's old home, and just enjoying good conversation, good food and catching up on each other's lives!! Did I mention a fun game of Chickenfoot??!!

We are so thankful to the guys who showed up to help us get the moving van unloaded and the storage units loaded -- in record time!! Thanks to JJ Maze, Roger Hood, Cezar, Armando, and Mark Vincent. I think Chris should get a proficiency certificate for stacking everything so everything fit in the three units!!!!

The girls had a decorating kit that they brought with them so we made brownies and decorated them along with some chocolate pretzel cookies. To make the cookies last, they licked off their first decorating efforts and tried again and again and again!!! They were kind enough to share with their brothers later!

Love my new Asian Lily that I planted last year - it's even prettier now that more buds have opened. Barron even had to tie it up as it grew heavy due to the many blooms. And just look at how the garden is growing!!! We have already had our first meal with fresh squash (Julia helped plant even though she doesn't like squash) and Barron was able to share a "mess" with sister Sandy.

Memorial Day

Barron rolled out the cannon he made and had it to display over the long weekend. The kids were impressed. Then there are a few pictures I made at the Cullman Memorial Day ceremony that had to be moved from the new Sportsmans Lake Veteran Park to the VFW Hall due to the rain. Thought David would enjoy seeing the Revolutionary uniforms.

New Signs at Church

Barron and our Associate Pastor, Wesley, drove to Roylston, Georgia last week to pick up some new church signs that were made by a BFC friend, Travis Rigdon. On the way home, Barron stopped at the local Chicken Express and introduced Wesley to some good cooking!! Sure wish Nate would open one for us here in Cullman.

This past Saturday and Monday, Jay Maze, his son Terence, and Barron put them into place. I couldn't resist showing off the pretty daylilies and beautiful rainbow that greeted us at church last night.

Mother's Day 2010 & May Family Plans

Eliz/fam gave me two hanging pots of "double impatiens" to put by the back patio and I am waiting for my amaryllis to bloom. The iris' from Wanda Scott Williams yard are beautiful and varied colors. Daylilies aren't ready yet and we keep having cool nights so it may be a while. It obviously rained in Huntsville overnight and still somewhat gray skies.

Barron and I drove down to Phenix City Friday afternoon and went first to Eliz house -- to see the kids of course. They are really growing up, getting taller! Julie and Mark are kind enough to let us use their spare bedroom and usually Mark cooks us a delicious breakfast. On Saturday Barron, Caleb and Julia drove up to Atlanta to pick up Nate from airport while Eliz, Julie, Abigail and I did some shopping in Columbus. We picked up lunch at Mike & Ed's BBQ which was one of the places on Nate's list that he wanted to eat over the weekend. All of us enjoyed going to Hunter's ballgame -- which unfortunately was one-sided - but it was a beautiful day to be outdoors. Kids enjoyed a little time on the playground at the park. Then Scott, Patti and Hunter and the 9 of us had dinner at El Vaquero -- we all love salsa and queso!! Sunday morning as Mom and Dad had stayed over at cabin, opted out of church (some went to SS -- I cooked food -- and then the Benton clan gathered at the cabin. Mom and Dad have added a covered deck to the cabin which extended the amount of people we can "sit" so needless to say we all had a great time and ate well! Terry and Clara Grimes joined us too. Some enjoyed fishing, some boatriding, some of us just enjoyed visiting, and eating a little more!!

Eliz/fam and us watched "the Blind Side" late Sun night at their house and then we returned to Julie's for sleeping. Eliz prepared breakfast for us, and then Nate came over. Chris had to go to work at 1:00 (does church after-school care), and Barron, myself, Nate and Ferdie met up at Dinglewood Pharmacy for their famous scrambled dogs. We said our goodbyes to Nate and went to visit with the folks for a while at the cabin, Eliz/kids drove up to visit for a while longer. Then we said our goodbyes to them and headed home. Eliz picked up Nate and dropped him at Groomes Transport in Cols for his ride to ATL airport. Talked to him before he got on the plane to advise about tornado warnings in Dallas. He hasn't checked in so assume all is okay. It's just 8:00 am here (I get to work at 7:00) so I'll put off calling him for a while longer.

Hope everyone had as great a Mother's Day as I did! Thanks Nate for the Mother's Day gift of your presence. Just don't know why we didn't make a family picture!! I do have some pictures I'll post later.

David is finished with school this Friday. Elizabeth has been packing up their household - and will continue to do so - and they will drive their moving van to Cullman on Sunday, May 30, and store all their belongings as they begin a 4 month fundraising tour of the United States. They have lined up speaking engagements from Alabama to Wisconsin to Texas, and all states in between. They will also spend a few days with Chris' parents in Kentucky.

This weekend may have been our last one together -- meaning Nate, Eliz/fam, us -- so it was a very special time!!

Attended retirement reception for friend Bill McDonald at The Zone, Bryant Denny Stadium, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa! We haven't seen Bryan and Scott in years so especially good to be with them on this special occasion. Dian never changes! Finally, a Garden at our new home

Barron decided to take the plunge and put in a small garden this year (and maybe the last he admitted later), planting Kentucky Wonder pole beans, Clemson okra, summer squash, and Big Boy tomatoes -- won't those taste yummy??!!

I was the smart one, I chose to stay at the house while the rest went over to John's to load up the truck with natural fertilizer, but I did take a picture of them.

(I thought it safest for the girls to stay inside the truck while Mr. Mark filled up the back with fertilizer -- the girls thought that was weird!)

Easter in Cullman

Elizabeth, Chris and kids came up on Thursday night to spend the long weekend with us. We had a lot of fun, from planting flowers, playing in the creek, scooping up cow poo for the new garden, hunting Easter eggs at our house and at church, browsing at Books A Million, renting and watching "The Spiderwick Chronicles", visiting with Aunt Sandy and Uncle Larry, having high attendance in our Young Couples SS Class, a friend joining us for Sunday worship, Jan surviving her solo in the musical drama, and then the girls staying over for a few days since Aunt Judy and Amy were coming to UAB for a doctor's appt and could take them back home --- just a fantastic time!!!!!!

Sunday afternoon, after Chris/Eliz/boys had left, Barron, Jan and girls rode over to Hood/Vincent house to get more cow poop and visit. The girls really enjoyed jumping on their trampoline with Nate and Jake. Kade was having fun blowing bubbles.

Monday, the girls went to work with Jan so Daddy Barron could work getting the garden ready for planting. We picked up breakfast at Burger King before coming onto the Arsenal, and then lunch at Chick Fil-A where they have an outside play area. One of the young employees gave each of the girls a stuffed cow since Julia had cut her hand and needed a band aid. Today (Tuesday) the girls went with Daddy Barron to Fairview Elementary for his mentor time with Matthew, and they were going to look at books in the library.

Wednesday night the girls will go to church with us, and then on Thursday back to work with Jan as Barron and Wesley are driving to SC to pick up our new church signs!!

Mom invited her daughters and daughters-in-law for a getaway time at Sky Valley. Julie, Jan and Cathy were able to join her at the condo for a long weekend. What fun!! We enjoyed shopping together and eating out, preparing meals together and eating in, rainy day indoors playing cards, games and watching movies (plus seeing and working on Cathy's Mediterranean tour photo albums), SNOW, a fire and beautiful scenery!! Julie surprised us by actually climbing inside this play bus at the antique craft mall - showoff!!

Bennie's Girls visit

Diane and Sissie (Cathy couldn't make it and their Mom stayed at her sister's place so we didn't get to visit with her) came to Cullman and invited us to get together with them for dinner at AJ's steakhouse, Sandy and Larry joine us. I stopped in Hartselle on my way home from Huntsville and picked up Aunt Martha so she could join us. What a great time we had together. Diane and husband Mike are into gardening in SC, while Sissie lives in AZ. We had gotten together last year when their father died and they held a memorial service at Cathy's place in Roswell, GA, but this was a pure FUN visit. Aunt Martha told stories on her brothers (who are no longer with us) -- had us really laughing. Thought I would share some candid photos I made during the meal. Why we didn't get a group picture, I don't know!! (Just remember I'm not in the photos because I am the photographer. Maybe Diane will share some that she made.)

Family Fun Weekend -- Nate, we missed you!!

Had lots of fun with Elizabeth, Chris, and the grandkids here on a snowy and very cold weekend. We checked out some stores (Tractor Supply, Game Spot), ate at Chick Filet and enjoyed their small, but at least indoor, play area, enjoyed dinner at The Old Cookstove Mennonite restaurant, of course church on Sunday morning, and Lupe's Mexican food for dinner!! Did I mention watching Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday night, and feeding the ducks at Sportsman's Lake?? Sandy and Larry came out for a visit on Sunday afternoon - we all enjoyed spending time with them. We all hiked up to John Garrison's pond next door for a little exercise. Monday I headed to work, but sadly the new snow and ice had created hazards on the road, so I turned around and came home. The kids headed south in time to stop at Chipotle's for their lunch!!

These are dolls Barron bought while in Calgary (they were getting ready for 1984 Winter Olympics) with BFC in 1983, where he helped build the first Canadian Baptist Seminary. I got them out while we were watching the Opening Ceremony for the Olympics. The girls loved them!!

Winter advisory out, but I am tucked away nice and warm in my trailer office. The snow and sleet don't appear to be sticking except on the porch deck. My only worry will be the bridge over the Tennessee River but hoping afternoon temps rise enough to keep that from being a problem.

Just a few photos I took before our event was over -- what a wonderful turnout!! Thanks to Amy Hutchison for the grape salad, to Amie and Melba for the chicken salad croissant sandwiches, to Lisa Maze for the punch, the pretty cake from Walmart, it was all delicious and a special thanks to Faye Hood for the table arrangement of beautiful red roses and dainty teapot and teacups (and she was sick and missed the event). I think every woman is looking forward to a monthly fellowship time, plus the Extraordinary Women Conference coming up in May. In late March we will meet with other women in the East Cullman Baptist Association for a Friday night retreat at Northbrook BC in Cullman. See you there!

Flowing Creek

Barron worked hard (and he and John spent some $$) to get the beaver dams gone -- and now we have a trickling creek again and a nice new bench to sit on too.

Creek runs down thru John's property and eventually under the road. Todd has moved his cows out so looks kind of empty over there.

SABC CHALLENGE HOBO DINNER AND SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS

A great time was had by all last evening. We started off with a hobo dinner (stew, cornbread, desserts). Each family brought veggies to add to the stew mix Barron had cooking on the stove. Add cornbread and sweets and you have your usual wonderful Baptist dinner. We then moved to the sanctuary for a time of study on "sacrificial giving". Then the Grand Finale, The Soggy Bottom Boys (played by Wesley Alldredge, Melvin Hunter, David Bright with guitar backup by JJ Maze) and Pappy O'Daniel (played by Barron Scott). Not sure if I can post the video clip I made, but at least you can see some pictures.

Barron and our Associate Pastor, Wesley, performed a short skit at church yesterday for our upcoming Hobo Dinner Saturday night. Their hardest part was trying to stay focused and not letting Roger get them tickled. Then the kids were asked to come up so Barron could teach them the PEANUT song. One of the kids, Ricky, was proud that he got to take the "campfire" home with him. I got to call Barron's cell phone so we could hear the train whistle. Here are a few pictures I made. We drove down to Phenix City after my work last Wednesday. Kids were waiting and ready to see us. Elizabeth, Chris and Barron fixed a spahetti dinner for us. Thursday morning we went over to Mama and Daddy's to rearrange the furniture so we could fit everyone in their house who was coming on Christmas morning. Elizabeth, Julie and I went over to Columbus to do a little last minute shopping. Julie and Mark hosted us for dinner Christmas Eve while Eliz/family had Christmas gift swapping at the May's.

We were so excited about Nate flying in that night, but alas, major snowstorm hit the Fort Worth area so he spent Christmas Eve at DFW airport, but was able to take an early flight so Barron met him at Atlanta airport.

Christmas morning we got up early so kids could check out their stockings and goodies that Santa brought. Then all of us that could (my siblings, spouses, kids and grandkids) gathered at Mom and Dad's for annual Christmas breakfast/brunch. Everyone ate well (too well actually) and had particular fun watching all the little ones open their gifts, not to mention that we didn't mind opening some gifts of our own as well.

On Saturday Julie, Eliz, Barron, Nate and I did some after-Christmas shopping -- love to go to Michaels and check out some of their deals -- visited such places as Kohl's, Hibbetts, Dicks, Columbus Book Exchange to name a few -- and then headed to Dinglewood Pharmacy in Columbus for their famous chili dogs!! Chris met us there with the kids, and we got to spend time with some friends who happened to drop in there as well. For those who remember Liz Entrekin from years back, she and her sister, Wendi, came there to see Eliz/family for a short while.

Managed to work in a short visit with Kevin, Cheryl, Sarah and Bob (and grabbing some new fishing stuff). Barron, Nate and I took some time to visit with Cathy and Billy at their home (and sample some of the cakes/pies she had there plus she fixed a good supper of vegetable soup and cornbread!!).Mom and Dad stopped by so they got to see Nate one more time.

Then we hurried over to Grooms (airport shuttle service) for Nate's return flight to Texas that evening. Sunday morning we sent Chris off early to Sunday School as he is currently serving as Children's Director at Lakewood BC. Eliz/girls and I got ready and picked up Barron on our way to church. For Sunday dinner, we (Barron, Elizabeth and I - Chris graciously took kids home) joined Mama, Daddy, Cathy and Billy at Red Lobster. Yummy!!

We made a quick trip to Julie's and Elizabeth's to load up suitcases, gifts, and other goodies and headed home.

It was an AWESOME Christmas!! (Now I'll go post some pictures)

It was wonderful to have all our family together at our home. The 4 grandkids came up on Monday courtesy of a special elf, Nate flew in on Tuesday, and Eliz/Chris drove up later in the day. The weather cooperated some days and we were able to enjoy being outdoors, checking out the creek and the swingset, cleaning out culverts, breaking down beaver dams, roasting marshmallows, playing nighttime games especially with Caleb's new night goggles, watching the movie UP, putting up the new Christmas tree inside while lighting a tree outside, having pictures made with Santa and LIVE reindeer, getting to ride in a school bus driven by Elf Roger, shopping, eating and then eating again -- FUN!!!!! Did I forget to mention the BIG GAME??!! And then taking Nate back to the airport and seeing him leave, then packing up and sending Eliz and family back home on Saturday, and spending a quiet evening just the two of us on Saturday night!! The autumn colors on the mountains that I get to see every day driving back and forth to Huntsville are so brilliant and vivid -- not enough words to describe it!! Where is Nate with his super camera??!!

Family Ties

We lost Uncle Jim (Wilkins) yesterday after a valiant struggle following several heart surgeries. The best news is we know he is with his Lord and Savior in a much better place where there is no sadness and no pain, and reunited with those family members who have gone before! That can put a big smile on your face, just thinking of that wonderful reunion, and we get to join them soon. (I do believe our time here is getting shorter!)

One of the best traditions of the Wilkins' family was their annual reunion. I remember the first one I attended after Barron and I married. The reunion locations alternated between Georgia and Alabama each year and this particular time the event was near Lake Jackson, GA. The strange thing was that Barron, having been away in Vietnam for several years, didn't recognize some of his distant kin so I didn't feel quite the stranger, and years later I still remember some just from that event, and got to know some much better over the years.

One thing you knew you would enjoy at the reunion was the meal. Those ladies (and sometimes men, as my husband is one of the best cooks around these parts) knew how to cook downhome southern style, and there was always a very large assortment - from fried okra to sweet corn to fried chicken to wonderful desserts - sometimes even homemade ice cream.

My leap into family genealogy came out of the family reunions. My mother-in-law had particularly asked me to trace her family tree, so I would come prepared to these gatherings with notebook and pen, and strive to get as much info as I could from people I was just beginning to know. I continue to pursue genealogy and especially learning more about our families, where they came from, how they worked, raised their families, worshipped.

Uncle Jim -- you were loved by your wife and children, your extended family, your church fellowship. You will be lovingly missed!!

Oktoberfest - Cullman style

We had a beautiful day on Saturday to get out and participate in Oktoberfest activities. The farmer's market was open at the Festhalle Plz, but there was German food, drink and music. The Cullman County Museum was open and free, and we enjoyed checking it out, plus the quilt display upstairs. We walked through the Classic Car show but missed the doggie parade. A quick stop by the Duchess Bakery for a treat, and perusing the items at A Touch of German.

Back near the house, the Garrison families were making Sorghum Syrup -- we are so glad they let us watch, and they had the Honey Barn open so we stopped in there as well.

For dinner, we dined at St. John's Evangelical Presbyterian church for a traditional German meal, my first taste of pickled cabbage! The apple cake was delicious!! We stopped by the sanctuary and sang along with a group performing there, such songs as "Turn your radio on" and "Unclouded Day".

Travis Lee Band

Last weekend we hosted the Travis Lee Band in our home! What terrific folks: Vic, Travis and Allegra Puhse. Mighty talented too. Vic and Travis (father and son) shared with the Spring Arbor Men at the monthly breakfast (thanks for allowing Allegra - Travis' wife - and Jan to join you). After getting back to the house, they took some time to catch up on some sleep as they had driven straight through from Baton Rouge, leaving Louisian after midnight -- just did make it in time for breakfast. Then we headed to the church to get all their band paraphanalia set up -- and we certainly appreciate Rex Helms coming over to make sure we got it done right!!

Pastor Roger and Vickie joined us for dinner Saturday night -- Barron cooked some fantastic hamburgers (voted as "the best hamburgers in the world")and everyone enjoyed Jan's homemade peach cobbler straight from the oven and topped with vanilla frozen yogurt!

Sunday morning the Travis Lee Band was in charge of the worship service (they even had a little time to join us in Bible Study) -- and Travis shared a word from the Lord as to the urgency of the times!!! Spring Arbor again showed themselves to be a super congregation by hosting a covered dish dinner - yummy!!!

Barron played tour guide as we drove around the streets of Cullman seeing the Festhalle Plaza, the Catholic Church twin spires, some of the beautiful older homes, and a walking tour of the Ava Maria Grotto!! JJ and Lisa Maze called and invited the Band and us to come over for a game of volleyball which we greatly enjoyed (of course Barron and Jan were delighted to observe). Unfortunately Allegra did take a fall and received a large bump on her leg but an ice pack made it feel much better - and I think she enjoyed her time in the jacuzzi tub too!!

Monday morning Barron and the Band headed to Cullman Christian School for a time of sharing with the middle school kids. Barron reported it was a very special time. As Travis had been a school principal and Allegra a teacher before God called them to step out in fulltime Christian evangelism, it was a perfect setting for them to share and enjoy! Thanks Roger for taking all four out to lunch as well.

They headed home to Missouri that afternoon and made the trip safely. If you would like to have the Travis Lee Band come to your church, retreat, conference, etc., we will gladly put you in contact with them, or you can find them on Facebook!!

The big day is almost here ... we leave for Phenix City Friday night and on to Disney World on Saturday!!!! Much preparation has gone into this event -- mostly by Elizabeth!! I anticipate this will be one of those "not to be forgotten" family times!!

As I noted on Facebook, we spent yesterday (Labor Day holiday and Barron's #62 birthday) quietly. His sister, Sandy, came over with a dozen of homemade yeast rolls right out of the oven - yummy!! I am really glad he shared!! Barron showed off his Yanmar tractor and the swingset he has rebuilt (it was an old one from the church). Friends and family called to wish him a Happy Birthday!!

Next week will be fun, fast, tiring, and probably over too soon so it was very nice to just spend a slow-paced day at home together!!!!

Elizabeth and kids pulled a fast one on us when they were sitting in the church pew when our Sunday School class was over yesterday! That gave us most of the day to have together, and they are staying an entire week! Appreciate Chris letting us have this time together - just wish he didn't have to stay home and work!

The kids loved the creek and the cleared area, plus we hung one of those disc swings under the large cedar tree so it's nice and shady most of the day! With this 90 degree weather you need lots of shade. We lost power for a while last night when a storm threatened, but no rain - only thunder! Fortunately the power was restored after about 2 hours. The girls were so tired they went to sleep in the van when we went to the store for a gallon of milk. The boys followed soon after a game of cards and dominoes!

I will upload some pictures of the kids at waterday at church, birthday pool party for a friend, and wedding pictures where the girls were flowergirls! Enjoy!!

Disney World

As some of you know, Barron and I are taking our family to Disney World in September -- what a way to celebrate getting a little older! Barron turns 62 and I am dragging 50 (59 to be exact). Elizabeth and I talk daily, checking out websites and learning all we can about the great things to see and do at Disney World. The girls even sent me a picture of them by the "countdown chain" they made. The grandkids get money for doing some of their chores, so Elizabeth printed out Disney Dollars so they can save them and exchange them for money to spend at Disney World. I thought that was an idea worth repeating! The kids will especially love having Uncle Nate along since he loves all those coaster rides! Ask him about Mountain Space from our trip years back -- I didn't do very well and swore never again!

BFC 2009 Project - sad farewells

Another BFC project concluded last night and we are already home. In fact, Barron has gone to buy gas so he can get busy cutting the grass which of course has grown several inches since we left last Saturday!

We stayed with Pastor Eugene Kilgore, wife Alisa, and three kids -- and joined by John and Mary Beckett and Chuck Pannell. What a great time we had each evening together as we looked back over the day to all that God had done!

Last night's dedication service was a lovely worship service! More about the entire project later, but had to share what a great time we had this week! If you were not with us -- then YOU missed many blessings! Continue to lift up those who are still traveling home!

The plan now is to get copies of ALL the pictures that were shared, plus the presentation, out to each family of the 2009 team -- plus to Ebenezer Baptist Church. This will take a little time but hope you will enjoy them!

BFC 2009 -- Pictures

BFC -- 2009 - Ebenezer BC, Dunlap, TN

BFC got off to a fine start ... Barron and I hosted four of our Texas group on Friday night and were joined at dinner at Bobby's Seafood by Vicki and Roger (and Cade) and Vonda and Melvyn. What fun! After a good breakfast at Hutch's, we (Texas 4 plus us) got on the road. Crossing Lake Guntersville and the Tennessee River, we arrived in Dunlap about 9:30. A number of the BFC team had arrived plus a host of folks from Ebenezer Baptist Church were already on the job site. The kitchen crew (of which I am one) prepared lunch for about 40 and by dinner we served almost 100 folks. A nearby church, Ewtonville Baptist, is allowing us the use of their multi-purpose building to prepare and serve the meals. Great fellowship. Pastor Eugene Kilgore shared with the team mighty miracles they have seen as they were able to purchase the land and building supplies in preparation for two BFC teams to assist them this summer. West Metro Association BFC from Atlanta will follow us in about two weeks - this is the first team Barron started when we lived in Paulding County, GA about 1987.

Barron and I are privileged this week to be staying at the Pastor's home with his lovely wife and three children (younger 2 are a set of twins). Three others from Texas are also staying there -- the kids have cheerfully given up their bedrooms for us! Adam, I made a picture just for you of our bedroom as it is decorated in Volunteer colors!!

We had a great service yesterday -- the music was DIVINE -- but unfortunately I had to leave last evening and return home so I could be at work today through Wednesday. Then I will drive the short 2 1/2 hours back to Dunlap and be with the team on Thursday and Friday. Vickie and Roger were to arrive last night but I did not get to speak to them before I left Dunlap.

Keep the BFC Team and the church in your prayers daily. On Friday evening we will have a Dedication Service after the evening meal -- usually on the job site -- as we thank the Lord together for all that He allowed us to accomplish this week! Disney World - here we come!

We had a special time with the kids Sunday night when we presented them with girl/boy - Mickey/Minnie baskets with special Disney items -- and let them guess what grand prize these "clues" were telling them. David immediately queried, "Are we going to Disney World?" And they were all very excited when the answer was YES, and included Daddy Barron, Grandmama Jan, Mama Elizabeth, Daddy Chris, Uncle Nate, and ... David, Caleb, Abigail and Julia!!!!! They have 90 days to talk to their friends who have gone before and find out the Do's and Don't's, the Best and the Least of what to do at Disney World. David talked to Uncle Nate on the cell phone to let him know that the SECRET was out!! It was even more fun the next day when they told their great-grandparents and their Aunt Julie about the plans.

Was so glad that we made it to Phenix City on Saturday in time for the visitation with the Carroll family. They certainly took a tragic event in their lives and made it very special for all of us at the funeral on Sunday when they shared a video of Rodney's life and theirs -- especially when Shea and Matt took time to give us their perspective on their Daddy, his influence - and most importantly on his spiritual walk with Jesus!! Amen!!

We took advantage of Cathy and Billy being away on their Mediterranean cruise to use their home as our base for the weekend. The girls spent the night with us Saturday night where we all ended up together in the master king size bed! When we left on Monday, the kids were enjoying Water Day at the church!!!!!

Just a few pictures of the new flowerbeds we added at edge of yard/driveway -- both for beauty and to hold soil in place. The daylilies are ones Barron dug up on Saturday from Uncle Jim and Aunt Inez' house. The gardenia bushes in the front flowerbeds are loaded with blooms and I am so enjoying their beauty and aroma! The roses are pretty and Eliz/family gave me a Welcome mini-flag for Mother's Day, but I have substituted a Flag one to use between Memorial Day and July 4.

Had a great SS class and worship -- and Vickie and Roger joined us for lunch at Jack's. Then a surprise visit from Uncle Jim, Aunt Inez, Mary, Velda and Pat (Inez' niece). They were very complimentary about the house and grounds.

Jonathan sent an email this morning and included a picture of his new home (the compound) in Afghanistan and several pictures made at the local bazaar of some of the beautiful rugs. I plan to get at least one for the house!

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

What a great time regardless of the rain that continues to come day after day! Church service was a tribute to those who have served our country in the military -and those who didn't come home! Barron and I wore our red-white-blue, as I explained to some, I am an Army brat that married a Viet Nam vet so I am patriotic through and through! David had chosen such beautiful music and Roger's sermon was all about the Greatest Sacrifice -- our Lord Jesus Christ!

Backing up to Saturday, we went out to Ebenezer cemetery to see the new Veteran's Memorial they have put up. Unfortunately we noted that Scottie's name is not on it but they have promised to correct that. Then we stopped by to visit Uncle Jim and Aunt Inez - and Sandy and Larry happened to stop by too. Uncle Jim looks better than he has in a while, but is putting in a large garden (an entire acre of peas) so not sure how long his health will last with all that is involved with gardening!

Sunday evening Tiny and Jackie came over as they were in town to celebrate with June on her 70th birthday and we had a great visit. Enjoyed sitting out on our front porch together. Finalized details for the Wilkins reunion and reminisced about the past!

Monday, Butch and Barbara joined us for lunch and Barron had prepared a delicious one: Grilled Ribs, onion and potatoes, sliced tomatoes and sweet cantaloupe!! We talked about family of course and they brought some papers for me to add to the family genealogy - which is a neverending task! I do so enjoy it so if any of you know how I could do it for retirement $$ -- please let me know. We made a quick trip out to the Wilkins house and showed off our new church building as well. We will definitely have to get together more often now that we are close by.

I forwarded Jonathan's 3rd email from Afghanistan to many of you (if you didn't get it and would like to, let me know) -- and how sad that our country lost two of its finest over the weekend!!!

Oh, what a fabulous time we had last Friday and Saturday! Super speakers: Julie Clinton, Angela Thomas, Karen Kingsbury, Thelma Wells, Stormie Omartian and the super funny and serious Chonda Pierce. Music by NewSong and Matthew West. Who could ask for more???!!! Even the rain couldn't defeat us!

As usual, on Sunday we attended Sunday School and Worship, then headed to Priceville to visit with Aunt Fannie. Cindy Scherer had asked us to pass along the gifts and pictures she had brought to town for her. Fannie loved the pictures but was very sad when see how Uncle Clyde had aged and then reading his obit. She said it was hard to realize that she had lost all 3 brothers now!

Weather has turned cool but SUNNY!!! We will enjoy it while we can, knowing that rain is predicted again for the weekend. Barron planted quite a few iris bulbs yesterday that Wanda shared from her garden. Now the front yard in lined with iris beds, plus a few more near the creek. Did I remember to tell you that he also planted two dogwood trees that he bought over the weekend? My sister Cathy also shared some Rose of Sharon bushes with us (some know them as Altheas). Maybe we can charge admission next Spring when everything comes into bloom??!!

Scott Family Reunion and Mother's Day plans

It was so good on Tuesday morning for some of our local Scott kinfolk to get together for breakfast at Cracker Barrel -- Cindy Scott Sherer, 3 daughters and 1 nephew were passing through so we had a quick gathering. Those present besides Barron and I and Cindy and family were Sandy Hicks, Wanda and James Williams, Doug and Ann Williams, Steven and Skyler. Scott Williams was able to stop on his way to work. We missed the others who couldn't make it. Cindy and family spent Monday night - or what was left of it by the time they arrived at 3:00 AM -- and were very complimentary about the house. We were delighted too with the pictures and gifts Cindy brought. Did I mention they were on their way to Pensacola for son Michael's graduation??

This Friday afternoon we will head to Phenix City for the weekend. I plan to stay with Elizabeth and the girls Friday night for a "Girls Night Out" as Chris and the boys will be at a RA campout. Then Saturday afternoon we gather at 12:30 for pizza and David's #9 birthday party. Hope he likes all his presents.

Sunday of course is Mother's Day so after church - weather permitting - the JP Benton clan will gather at the cabin for a time of food, fun and fellowship. If it proves to be a rainy forecast for the day, we will just gather in Lakewood Baptist Church's fellowship hall and have time together. Maybe someone wil remember to bring dominoes for a quick game of Chicken Foot, or cards so we can play Spades or Rummy or Canasta! The kids will probably be on their DS's. Maybe we should bring a video to watch??!

Wow!! Just a quick note to reflect on the past week and the coming week of stormy weather we have had here in north Alabama. The sirens kept going off at Redstone Arsenal today as tornados were in the area -- but thank goodness all are safe! Understand some damage was done in Tuscaloosa, Jasper, Hartselle and Madison. Barron is worried that the grass is going to be too high to cut -- maybe have to bring in a hay bailer!!

What a great weekend we had in Phenix City! We drove down on Thursday. First order of business -- return four grandkids to their parents. Friday, Jan, sister Julie, and daughter Elizabeth went shopping at Kohls -- and spent time with sister Cathy who we rain into at Steinmart! A quick lunch at Chick Filet! Friday night, Cathy and Billy hosted Mom and Dad and Barron and I for supper at Longhorn to celebrate parents' 63rd Anniversary! Billy gave us a tour of Broad Street, the River Walk and CSU buildings in Columbus, and then a brief look at some new large homes in north Phenix City -- right before the thunderstorm hit. Made it home safely and then watched the local weather station as 3 different storms passed through with emergency sirens blasting! Fortunately all were safe and no power outages. Thank you Lord for watching over us.

Saturday morning I went with Eliz/Chris and kids to an in-store egg hunt at Barnes and Noble. What fun!! The staff hid 300 eggs all over the store and only 9 kids were there (4 were ours) to find them. Then a free cookie at Starbucks' counter and a craft to make! We had a wonderful time.

Daddy and Barron had gone to the cabin (Barron was under the weather so no fishing for him) and Mama and I rode out and picked them up (Kevin had to take the truck back to town earlier). Everything was in order for our gathering on Sunday.

Saturday afternoon was egg dyeing time with the kids -- they always have a blast doing this!

Worship at Lakewood was DYNAMITE -- wonderful music, great sermon, super people!!

Everyone (22 of us) met at the cabin for lunch and we definitely ate well. Weather was PERFECT! Kids got to fish, boat ride and hunt eggs - adults got to sit and chat!

Trip home was uneventful although Barron had to drive in rain from Montgomery to Cullman - but thankfully no storm!

Landscaping Completed

Barron is convinced that he is the best rye grass planter because he has to cut it every single week and it is just April! I think the black mulch really helps the landscaping "pop" as they say on all those TV shows. The small bed with the rock border is one of the two that the grandkids did last week. They had a ball going down to the creek, crossing the creek by walking very carefully across a log, climbing trees, and digging up rocks. Then they got to ride in the trailer that Daddy Barron pulled with the lawn tractor!

We love the SNOW picture taken of the house, but really like these that show off the hard work of adding shrubbery, landscape cloth and mulch. Don't you think the very green grass is beautiful?! Still have to do the east side of the house where the azaleas and camellias are planted - but that's a job for tomorrow. Not to mention the back bed where my amaryllis are planted - sure hope they bloom this year!

Highs and Lows

One of the highs: the landscaping Barron has been doing looks wonderful! The grass is so green, and now we have flower beds with mulch. Thanks to Spencer Crumbley and Cezar (I hope I spelled it right) for helping us get the landscape cloth down and the mulch on top. They will come again on Monday and help us get more of it done.

One of the lows: new minivan needs new brakes -- yikes at that expense!

Another high: Coworker/friend Gary Stapler provided transportation for me to get to work and home today. Had a great time with him meeting Barron and showing off the new house and yard.

A big low: Cousin Debbie Brown has been diagnosed with acute leukemia - and kidney infection adding poison to her system. Please join us as we pray for Deb (principal at Cold Springs Elementary) and her brother, Rex (whose wife is principal at Fairview Elementary) and their families. Their mother, Midge, is the oldest Wilkins cousin (Barron's mother's side) and is in nursing home in Hanceville.

Another low: Barron cannot shake the hacking cough that just keeps using all his energy. He is on another round of meds so we are hopeful that these will work!

Visit Home

What a great weekend we just had in Phenix City. I took off work Friday so we would be sure and have plenty of visit time since so many activities were planned and Nate was in town. Thanks again to my baby sister and hubby Mark for letting us stay with them. We spent Friday visiting with the girls who just turned 5 this past Tuesday and enjoyed shopping time with them. Visited with the boys when they got home from school (they have been attending Veritas Academy at Lakewood Baptist Church). My Mom and Dad took us out to dinner at Cracker Barrel that night. On Saturday we went over to Columbus to visit Barron's cousins, Tiny and Jackie Latham, had lunch together at Country's Bar-B-Q and ended up with some dwarf liriope for our yard! Had a great time at the girl's birthday party (hard to believe how fast the past 5 years have gone) and then hurried over to Lakewood Church to congratulate Harris Henderson on his 80 years!! His daughter Martha and I attended Central together and West Side Baptist Church. I remember spending nights with her back in elementary school. Saturday night my sister, Julie, prepared a delicious meal of Chicken Divan (or Divine) and fluffy pink salad (yummy!). On Sunday we starting preparing a few dishes for Sunday dinner, then headed off to church. Told the kids goodbye - and then some of my siblings/spouses came over and we put dinner together and ate well. My sister, Cathy and hubby Billy, had dug up quite a few goodies from their yard for us to use in ours -- they did all the hard work. Hated to say goodbye to Nate, but hopefully we'll be getting together soon. We had a safe trip home, and I even had time to wash several loads of clothes before bedtime.

Check Elizabeth's blog for pictures of the girls birthday party (but since they are entertaining friends from Texas, it might take a few days). The Hutson's also brought their Wii Fit so they are really staying busy. Chris' dad had also been able to get to town for girls' party, but poor Aunt Judy had the flu and had to miss!!

Thank you Lord for such a good time spent with family and friends!!!

Enjoying LIFE

We are having a great visit with Thomas and Cathy Cole. They arrived yesterday at the same time that I got home from work and off to supper we went. Met up with Roger and Vickie Hood, and David and Andrea Bright at Bobby's Seafood in Eva -- yummy! Took them by Spring Arbor to show off the church -- and they were so impressed!! Taught them to play Chickenfoot (Dominoes) and then we called it a night. This morning we had an early rise so we could get to Ryans for Men's Breakfast. Cathy and I ate separately from all those men/boys and took pictures for the Pictorial Directory -- then we headed out to SHOP! Seriously, went to Hobby Lobby to buy craft items for SS tomorrow (I'm substituting for April Alldredge), breezed through Bennett's, quick look in Margos, dropped off books at library and got home in time to have lunch! Now Barron is talking about driving around the area for a while -- and maybe we'll get snow tonight!!

A Week with the Grandkids

The neat thing about your grown children going on a trip is that you get to keep the grandkids and have FUN!! Elizabeth had the opportunity to fly to Fort Worth and spend a week with her friend, Amy and many others -- and scrapbook!!! (not to mention spending some time with her brother) As Chris had to work each day, Daddy Barron and Grandmama Jan came to the rescue and agreed to keep the 4 grandkids. Daddy Barron kept the kids fairly busy during the day while Jan was at work and then got to relax a little when Jan was home. Here are pictures of the kids building and enjoying a campfire and roasting marshmallows. Then a few pictures of our time at FunZone!

2009 - A New Year Begins with Old and Dear Friends

We had a marvelous time the second of January traveling over to Marietta and visiting with old friends. Rick and Judy Crumbley joined us for a quick dinner and the Legacy Five (our favorite southern gospel group) 10 year Anniversary concert at Roswell Street Baptist Church (and Greater Vision - another favorite - performed as well). On Saturday we met Ted and Mich Sanders for lunch and just enjoyed catching up on life, kids and grandkids. That night Rick, Judy, Barron and I enjoyed dinner at the Marietta Fish Market (yummy shrimp for me!) and then laughed our way through several hands of Uno! Sunday morning we were given the tour of the new facility for Noonday Baptist Church and were excited to see many familiar faces from our past: Mayrice Graham, Glenda and Sammy; Richard and Judy Walden; Dick and Carole Schneider; Jack, Iris and Johnsey Cook; Marie Prance; Margaret Jackson -- oh how sweet the fellowship!! Sammy and Glenda joined us for dinner at the Rib Ranch restaurant for good barbeque.

We stopped by Tommy and Kathy Graham's in New Georgia as we were making our way home. What a sweet time of visiting and catching up on their three girls!

Bill and Dian McDonald were our guests on Friday, January 15, as Bill was the guest speaker for the SAM Breakfast (Spring Arbor Men) on Saturday morning. Dian and I had a leisurely breakfast (which I actually prepared) and a chance to catch up with what had been going on with our kids, parents, and siblings. Bill (on staff at University of Alabama as Director of Sports Medicine) was a big hit at the breakfast as he had brought BAMA memorabilia with him to share! Several of the boys were particularly delighted to receive autographed pictures of Nick Saban! One was heard to tell his parents: "This was the best day of my life!"

Saturday night was our Sunday School Adult 2 Fellowship Dinner and the dominoes and rook cards came out! Again, an evening of sweet fellowship. On Sunday, Roger and Vicki invited us to join them at the movie, and the funny thing was we were already at the movie theatre waiting for the show to begin, and we enjoyed a brief time of eating and fellowship afterward -- as only Baptists can -- at Jack's before heading to our respective homes.

Family Ties

Christmas is all about surprises! Santa brought the kids a Wii !! Caleb was the PRO at bowling, scored over 200! Then Daddy Barron and I had to try baseball -- my arm ached for quite a while! The girls loved their new kitchen, the boys got Legos -- and so much more!

We watched the little ones exchange their gifts to each other, then gave them gifts from us, plus Christmas Day with the Benton clan: parents/siblings/inlaws/children/grandchildren but sure missed Nate being in Texas!!

Barron and I hope each of you had a Merry Christmas and will have a WONDERFUL NEW YEAR!!

Wow, seems like forever since I added anything to the blog. Guess life has been moving at a faster pace or nothing much going on??!!

Thanksgiving has come and gone but wanted to share some pictures of the great time we had with our family. Except for Mom and Dad having problems finding the house, things went without a hitch. Elizabeth and family picked up Nate at Birmingham airport on their way to the house (but managed to find time to stop and eat at Chipotle first).

Leaving Mom and Dad at home to rest after their "lost" ordeal, we enjoyed dinner at Carltons Italian Restaurant. A good time was had by all but unfortunately the news of the attacks in India was on the large screen.

The best fun of the day was getting the GRAND TOUR of the HONEY BARN. Phillip and Nancy Garrison were kind enough to open up the store and give the kids (young and old) an educational presentation about gathering honey -- and then let us spend some money in their store. Mom chose a beeswax nativity while I bought a turkey candle - Caleb picked it out!

Thanksgiving morning Daddy Barron prepared grits and eggs for the hungry crew and then dinner preparation began (although the girls had helped me fix Watergate salad the night before). Our feast consisted of: spiral baked ham, turkey and dressing, Sister Schubert rolls, watergate salad, cranberry salad, broccoli /rice/cheese casserole (known as green rice at our home), deviled eggs, corn on the cob, green beans, sweet potato casserole with pecan pie and Italian Creme Cake for dessert. (Thanks to Sandy for the cake and dressing) The big surprise was David losing a tooth while eating his corn!! Sandy and Chris and new fiance Jenn came out and visited with us after dinner.

Although Eliz/Chris/Nate and I tried staying up so we could go shopping early on Black Friday, by 3:00 I had decided that nothing was that important. So after Mom/Dad and Chris departed for Phenix City, Elizabeth, Nate and I went shopping for my flatscreen TV -- Daddy Barron was a trooper and watched the four kids. We had to go to two Best Buy stores to find it - a 40 inch Toshiba - but we did and got it on sale!!! (Thanks Mary Nan!!!) It took several of us to get the mounting unit on the wall (and a trip to Radio Shack to get the right size) and then the TV, but it was done!! The kids were fascinated with Nate climbing in the attic and talking to us through the wall/ceiling!!!

Elizabeth, Abigail, Julia and Grandma Jan did some Christmas shopping and window looking on Saturday morning, a quick lunch back at the house, and then we all piled in the van to take Nate to the airport. Stopped at Target on the way home as Cullman only has Walmart.

Sunday morning Elizabeth was my special speaker for "Lottie Moon Mission Moment" at church as she shared about her friends Joy and Kendall Helgren who are serving with the IMB in Zambia and Mozambique. She did a great job!!! Caleb was asked by Pastor Roger to sing his new song ("The Chipmunk Song") for everyone and he did a Super job!! The next days went quickly and Wednesday morning the grandkids and Elizabeth departed for their house!!

What a great time of celebration!! We so enjoyed having everyone at our new home and they were so complimentary about it!!

Grass Trees Straw

Barron has been busy with landscaping: grass, trees, straw -- not to mention our work in the backyard to make a space for the kids to play Robin Hood under the trees by the creek. Wonder if we can find a tree swing to hang ....

Thanks to Blake Lindsey (our contractor) for the housewarming gift of a storm door for the front -- now I can really enjoy that wonderful view -especially the sunset! Beautiful!!!!

Recent changes in my life: new job and new vehicle (well, new to me). I work as an Administrative Assistant for Chugach-Alaska Corp subsidiary known as Chugach Government Services Inc. Who would have thought in 1990 when we were in Anchorage Alaska on my first BFC trip that I would work for a corporation headquartered in Anchorage?? Certainly not me!!

The trip to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville is 42 miles (one way) if I take the cut-through over the moutains -- the more scenic route! If I take interstate 65 and then 565, it is 60 miles. So my Chevy Venture had almost 150,000 miles and this seemed to be the right time to change cars. My new Dodge Grand Caravan was a program car and only had 30k miles on it. Love the automatic side doors and the stow-and-go of the seats for hauling stuff, plus the well in the back to sit your bags of grocery so they don't slip and slide and spill everywhere.

Barron's cousin, Donald Judkins and his wife, Becky, came over for homemade chili and hot dogs last Sunday. It was such fun to show off the house - and they were very complimentary about everything.

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving in our new home. Mom and Dad are driving up on Wednesday, and Elizabeth, Chris and kids will pick Nate up at Birmingham airport for us on Wednesday about 12:30. We'll have time to show off the house and visit and then start the food prep for Thanksgiving meal. Some of Barron's family plan to stop by and spend some time with us over the long weekend too. It's so good to be closer to family!!!!!!!!!

Spring Arbor had a great turnout for its first annual Cowboy Carnival. We had the Firing Range. Pin the tail on the Pony, Shave the Goat (be sure and ask David Bright, Melvyn Hunter, Adam Nelson, and Wesley Alldredge about this), the Cakewalk - always a big hit and Milinda was great as the MC, Slop the Pig, Duck Pond, Barrel Race, Bye Bye Crow, Fishing Hole and War Paint, not to mention hot dogs, chips and drinks. All in all a great night of fun and fellowship!! It is exciting to be part of a church that wants to reach its community for Christ!!!!

Fun in Phenix City

We had a great time being with family this past weekend. Here are pictures of the kids learning to climb the trees in Grandma Esther's front yard. Enjoy! Can you find Robin Hood alias Caleb in the tree? Our family showered us with some housewarming gifts after Sunday dinner too -- now when folks come to visit there will be new sheets and towels for them -- so come visit!!!

I am getting requests for pictures of the inside of the house, but I really wanted to wait until boxes were emptied, pictures on wall, office set up, a little more TLC .. but I am giving in to the pressure and posting a few! My camera isn't the best for this, but hope you will get the idea that we are making progress! (Still haven't decided on a flat screen for over the mantel, so for now we are using the one we had in Texas.)

We are looking forward to a visit from Willie and Dena Evans this Thursday. They will be stopping by on their way home to Texas after a BFC 2009 pre-meet in Dunlap, TN. The guest room is ready for company so we hope they will stay over with us. (Of course Barron will have to be the host as I will be finally working at my new job in Huntsville.)

We also had a great visit with Diane (Wilkins) and hubby Karl yesterday. Diane was so sweet to loan us her house while we were building this one. Her sister Elaine came with them and we just had a good time catching up on the latest with their families. The siblings had plans to get together for dinner so we joined them: Butch and Barbara (from Huntsville), Elaine with hubby Chris (who helped me get internet service) and son Bobby (Cullman), Diane and Karl (Ocean Springs, MS), and Barron and I. Uncle Jim (their Dad's brother), Sandy (Barron's sister) and Larry (her husband) came by the restaurant to visit for a while.

Elizabeth, Chris and the kids are in Panama City at the BEACH and were joined today by their Texas friends, Amy and Jeremy Hudson and kids, Grant and Molly. You will have to check out their blog to see what they are up to (www.maymemos.blogspot.com) This is also the week that my parent's have a timeshare at Ocean Towers in Panama City so the kids will go over there to use the heated pool. Seems my brother, Kevin with his wife, Cheryl and daughter Sarah joined Mom and Dad for a few days, so Sarah and the grandkids spent Saturday together at the beach. My sister, Cathy and her hubby are relaxing a few days in Panama City as well. I heard that my sister Karen (and husband Steve live in Panama City) invited some of the gang over to her house last night to watch the Auburn game (so sorry they lost to Arkansas!).

Thanks to so many friends and family members for their invaluable help in not only getting us moved into the house over the weekend but helping unpack boxes and making beds! I hope I don't leave out anyone, but I want to list folks by name:

Spring Arbor: Roger Hood, Wesley Alldredge, his friend Cecil (glad he is electrician as well as great truck packer), Lance Boyd and son Truman, Vonda and Melvyn Hunter

The MOVE would not have happened without their HOURS of HARD WORK. We still have boxes yet to be unpacked but all the necessities are in place.

I have to mention Rex Helms for his non-ending efforts in getting our surround system (and Direct TV) installed and all those speakers and equipment.

Nate arrived last night and we kept him busy putting in dimmer switches, moving furniture, installing subwoofer - and just enjoying having him here for a short while. He was able to hitch a ride with one of his suppliers who makes a bi-weekly trip to Atlanta, we met them in Birmingham - and will do a turn around tonight!

Once we have some rain, the landscaping can begin so we'll keep posting pictures! Please stay in touch!

Life in the Fast Lane

Tomorrow is the BIG Day -- we move into our new house. While I worked from home on my new job because the office "modular" building is not yet ready for occupancy, Barron started moving lots of things from our temp house. The house looks spectacular and we had to make big decisions like "which drawer do we use for the utensils?"

We are thankful for the many new friends and family who have said they will come and help us get settled. Since I am working from home for a few days, I am thankful that we don't have to be out of our temp house on any certain day so I can have internet service until our ISP provider can move the antenna to the new location!

Thanks to each and everyone who had a part in us building our house and getting moved in!! We love you! Thanks, Lord, for taking care of us in "God's Country". Now to fill up that jacuzzi tub and enjoy a good soak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Texas Visit

This has been a fantastic visit. Air travel was uneventful which was a blessing. Mary Nan treated me royally, as did my other host family, Debbie and Mike Murray. Unfortunately, Mike was sick on Friday night/Saturday and Debbie had bad reaction to heat and giving blood, but they recovered quickly and we had a great visit. Saturday night Betty and Wayne Reinert had me to their house for a time of fellowship and catching up.

It was such fun to show up at Sunday School and surprise everyone, and then they surprised me with an engraved "Sweet Home Alabama" photo album!! And a wonderful card signed by each of them -- thanks much to a great class that we miss so much! Nate came to church and then took me out for lunch at a new place and we just enjoyed our time together (we also went window shopping at BestBuy). Kitty (and Larry) hosted me this afternoon and we just had time sharing with each other.

Heard from my new lady boss and downloaded employee forms that I will fill out and give to her on Tuesday! Looking forward to this new experience!! I fly back home on Monday afternoon!

Getting better and better

As some of you know, I got the opportunity to fly out to Fort Worth and visit friends in Willow Park and former co-workers/bosses at BNSF. So I won't post any pictures, but wanted to update you on the house. Appliances are in, light fixtures and plugs are in (took lots of light bulbs), plumbing is working (YEA!!) and I remembered to take some toilet paper over there. The pendant lights look especially nice, in fact I thank everyone who helped me in the process. Tile man was working on kitchen backsplash on oven wall and will be finishing up the tub backsplash in the master. So much work was getting done this week! Barron will be setting up his shop while I am out of town. I am also starting my new job on Tuesday, so keep us in your prayers. MOVE DATE is Saturday, Oct 4 -- anyone in the area who wants to help is WELCOME!! Barron plans to move some items on Friday too.

Thanks to everyone who was a part of our house project. It is simply beautiful. Can't wait to see the landscaping accomplished!!

Faucets, Faucets and More

So glad the plumbers were at work today! Electrician comes tomorrow to put up all those lights and all those outlets - and get the appliances in. William is back to finish closets and a little trimwork. Getting closer to move in date of October 4!

What a wonderful day we had today. Started off the day by heading to the new house to finish installing window blinds (unfortunately no other workers were there!). Saw a lot of activity at our neighbor's place (Philip & Nancy Garrison) and had to find out what was going on. Seems David and Philip and their families were making cane/sorghum syrup similar to the way they had helped their Dad in years past. They had already pressed the cane and the juice was cooking. Had the pleasure of meeting more of the Garrison family: Jeanette and Hanley (our new across-the-street neighbors), and David, Martha and son Caleb. David is Minister of Music at nearby Welcome Baptist Church. Came home for lunch, did some laundry, and decided we had to go back and check on the syrup making. They had poured up one batch and more was cooking!

We got a return phone call from Tim and Jan Sexton that they were home and we could come over. Several weeks ago we had visited with them at Jack's and started talking genealogy. I got some basic information from the two of them and spent several evenings doing research on the computer. So we took some of the information I had printed for them and showed them how they could do further research courtesy of the internet and Ancestry.com. Jan's Mom stopped by and Barron was able to talk about his Scott/Haynes relatives with her. Then Jan invited us to stay for taco soup and burritos and we are glad we accepted that invitation. Had opportunity to get to know their children too.

Hurried home to make peach cobbler for the Scott Reunion tomorrow! (will add fried okra and fried chicken to that) Did I mention that we had rain last night and it was a nice cool day today? Know the syrup guys were so glad of that!! Thank you Lord for a wonderful day!!!!!!

Kitchen Countertops

Don't they look lovely?? You might notice that the small cabinet to the right of the refrigerator is missing its top -- we don't know why! Maybe it just didn't get on the truck. But the two pieces they cut out for the sink they made into cutting boards (so now we have something to take with us to the shop so we can pick out the backsplash tile! Just thought that the cutting boards were such a good idea! Plumber is to come in tomorrow - yea!!! I'll be glad to have indoor plumbing! Looks like moving date will be October 4 (since I will be in Texas next weekend!).
